Castle of Aidone - Ruins of the Norman castle Castellaccio

The Castle of Aidone - Ruins of the Norman castle Castellaccio is located on the northern outskirts of the town on a plateau at an altitude of 889 meters above sea level, at the end of via Castello, dominating the Gornalunga valley. The site of the castle is located in an elevated position with respect to the town which developed in a southerly direction in the area below; the orographic characteristics of the locality meant that the castle remained in a detached and distinct position from the rest of the town. From the hill on which it stood it is possible to embrace the surrounding panorama at 360°: from the castle, therefore, a vast portion of the territory was visually controlled.

Very little remains of the complex which certainly must have occupied a rather large area, as shown by the sections of masonry emerging along the ring road of the site. To the east remains a portion of the wall with an entrance passage, while a more substantial amount of masonry, reduced to a pile of ruins, is the scenario that presents itself to the visitor who reaches the site from the current Salita Castello.

The arrangement of these remains is singular, showing the rotation of about 90° of a portion of the wall: from the arrangement of these ruins it can be deduced that the castle was most likely destroyed by a catastrophic event, probably the earthquake of 1693. The masonry is of the 'sack' type with two masonry facings in ashlars with regular appeals; among the few remains there are some corner portions where the use of squared stones to define the cantonal can be observed.
