Tombs of the Via Latina - Appia Antica Archaeological Park
The Archaeological Park of the Tombs of Via Latina is an archaeological site in Rome, in the Tuscolano district, crossed by the ancient Via Latina, which preserves an important funerary complex dating back to the 2nd century.
The area, handed over for protection to the Appia Antica Archaeological Park, is of great interest because it still retains the original appearance of the Roman road substantially intact at the third mile.
The archaeological investigations in the area were conducted between 1857 and 1858 by Lorenzo Fortunati, a school teacher passionate about archeology who obtained permission from Pope Pius IX to conduct archaeological excavations at his own expense in the area between the current Via Appia Nuova , via Arco di Travertino and via di Demetriade, which at the time were owned by the Belardi and Barberini Lante della Rovere.
