A stone's throw from Piazza Unità d'Italia and a hundred meters from the sea, is Piazza della Borsa: once the beating heart of Trieste's commercial life.
In this square, which today represents the "second living room of the city", some of the most important commercial places of the entire city find their precise location: the Stock Exchange, the Chamber of Commerce, some banks and fashion shops.
This square, now a pedestrian area, can be easily reached by walking the few hundred meters of the pedestrian section that separate it from Piazza Unità. The site where Piazza della Borsa stands was once located just outside the city walls.
Proof of this is that at the point where the passage with Piazza Unità d'Italia winds its way was the gate of Vienna and the houses that border the square towards San Giusto follow the line of the ancient walls in the direction of the tower of Riborgo.
This square, formerly called della Dogana, has a characteristic triangular shape, is surrounded by numerous palaces on all sides, and houses a pillar with the statue of Leopold I on its surface. The Piazza, once upon a time, was profoundly different from the current one.
Very frequently the sea in periods of high tide penetrated it extending also in the surrounding areas. Its surface was often occupied by carriages and trams, which stopped here waiting to pick up passengers.
Today, there is definitely no trace of the epic storm surges of the past. And the public transport of the past has made way for the most modern buses and mopeds.
The square owes its name to the Palazzo della Borsa. A neoclassical style building, which was built on a project by the architect Mollari (1800 - 1806). The building, now the seat of the Chamber of Commerce of Trieste, however, has undergone lengthy restoration works throughout its history.
If on the facade of the building a four-column portico is visible decorated with innumerable statues, which represent: Asia, Europe, Africa, America, Mercury and Vulcan. In the upper part, however, there are some statues representing: Neptune, Minerva, Danube and the Genius of Trieste. Next to Palazzo del Mollari is Palazzo Dreher, which currently houses the Trieste Stock Exchange.
Not far away is also the Casa Bartoli: one of the most beautiful examples of Trieste's Art Nouveau style The one to be clear, which was theorized by professor Otto Wagner at the Vienna Polytechnic, and was taken up by numerous local architects who were enraptured by the classicizing of the lines and the grandeur of the valuable decorative elements.
Piazza della Borsa is particularly suggestive during the Christmas period. When is suggestive the Christmas markets (click here for watch a video!).
Or on the numerous occasions when it hosts street artists, small concerts or the most diverse folkloristic events. Click here and you will discover the “Serbian” of Triest!
Not far from here stands the Palazzo Tergesteo. It is a neoclassical building built between 1840 and 1842, on the site of the Dogana Vecchia which was designed to provide the city with a commercial area in which business could take place.
The building is made up of four bodies divided by a Greek cross gallery which defined a kind of avenue with shops on either side. The building rises on six floors and has four staircases, one for each building and is made up of very high noble floors, inter-floors and mezzanines.
The commercial activities are located on the ground floor and it is distinguished by the barrel vaults on which many frescoes and bas-reliefs are depicted, while the noble floors have stone and brick walls.
Today, the Palace, and more particularly its Gallery (architect Butazzoni - 1863) proves to be the preferred pedestrian passage to reach the square in front of the "Giuseppe Verdi" opera house Inside the Gallery, people from Trieste love to stroll, peek into the windows of some prestigious shops or more simply arrive there for a fleeting aperitif at the bar.
