Headquarters of the Gendarmerie Corps in the Vatican City State which has public order, security and judicial police functions are delegated to the Gendarmerie Corps.
It was established two centuries ago and called the "Pontifical Carabinieri Corps" by Pope Pius VII in the distant 1816, with the restoration of the Church State, following the Congress of Vienna, after the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire.
The Corps, reporting directly to the Minister of Arms, then exercised its functions throughout the territory of the State which included Emilia Romagna, the Marches, Umbria and Lazio.
