Unity of Italy Square - Large Square - Virtual Tour 360°

Unity of Italy Square (Piazza Unità d'Italia) for Trieste simply "Piazza Unità" or "Piazza Grande", was for many centuries the fulcrum of daily life and from the mid-1700s also the point of communication between the old and the new city.

The original square, with a quadrilateral shape, was built on the old port now underground and was covered by walls and towers on the part facing the sea. In the early nineteenth century, it underwent a radical intervention that gradually led to the demolition of some buildings, and to the subtraction of more space from the sea in order to ensure an area of ??16,000 square meters.

Piazza dell 'Unity of Italy represents the "city living room", where the alleys that run from the Borgo Teresiano towards the sea arrive. But not only that, the Piazza represents the place par excellence where you can see the real Trieste in its most cultured essence, where the whiteness and elegance of its buildings stand out the bars and cafes that surround this square.

On the top facing the hill of San Giusto, in 1875, the architect Giuseppe Bruni designed the Town Hall, whose facades are characterized by a mixture of Parisian style and Germanic mannerism.

On the bell tower of the town hall, still today after many years, and statues of the two Moors Micheze and Jacheze mark the time every quarter of an hour. The first twelve strokes struck at noon on January 14, 1876.

The square has been restored several times over the centuries. The current appearance derives from the restructuring of 2001-2005. It was a complete restoration, which also involved the adjacent buildings. Act of a complete restoration, which also affected the adjacent buildings. The asphalt pavement was removed and replaced with sandstone blocks very similar to the traditional "masegni" which, historically, paved the square.

The Fountain of the Four Continents; built in 1751 by the hand of the Bergamo sculptor Gian Domenico Mazzoleni, it was placed in front of the main entrance of the Town Hall, bringing it back to its original location. On the sea side, a lighting system with blue LEDs was installed that would remind us of the ancient mandrake buried over the centuries.

When night comes, the current Piazza dell'Unita looks even more beautiful. Click to see one of his videos from Youtube.

Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia represents a piece of city history. Let's retrace the most important moments of Trieste and its citizenship.

On 2 July 1914, the mourning maona carrying the bodies of Archduke Francesco Ferdinando and his wife Sofia landed on the quay in the square. His arrival marked the end of a historical period that gave the city great prestige.

Also here, on November 3, 1918, thousands of Triestines, with trepidation, awaited the arrival of the destroyer Audace and the return of Italy.

Also from this square, on 18 September 1938, the Duce announced the promulgation of the Racial Laws.

And, finally, on October 26, 1954, the people of Trieste returned to the square, once again acclaiming the arrival of the Italian troops.

Even today, the square remains one of the symbols of the city of Trieste. Even recently there have been major demonstrations of protests, concerts that attracted a large crowd as well as the privileged venue for that tradition, now handed down from fathers to sons, who here call "the liston".

That is the mid-morning Sunday walk in which the people of Trieste meet in the square with their friends, chatting while waiting for the aperitif time just before Sunday lunch.

This square is really liked by the people of Trieste. Any time of day or year is a good time to make an appointment right here. And there is no tourist who does not associate his visit to Trieste with this place with a clear "Central European flavor" that offers truly breathtaking sunsets and knows how to warm the heart, especially at Christmas, when among Christmas trees, plays of light and a thousand decorations it becomes absolutely magical.

Piazza dell'Unità is a record-breaking square. Static in hand, it is one of the largest squares in the world open to the sea.

With the gaze, its visitor can get lost with the gaze between the coast with the castle of Miramare up to the castle of Duino and, further up up to Gretta, up to the Faro della Vittoria; or admire, on the crest of the karst edge, Monte Grisa with its sanctuary. On the opposite side you can see the Istrian coast from Koper (in Italian Capodistria), up to Savudrija (Punta Salvore).

On the sides not facing the sea, the square is surrounded by numerous historic buildings: Palazzo Stratti, the Palazzo della Prefettura, the Model building and the Palazzo del Comune with its clock tower. The view is completed by the Government Palace, now the seat of the Hotel Duchi d'Aosta, and the Palazzo Pitteri.

At its edge and in the neighboring streets, on the other hand, there are the historic Caffè degli Specchi and the Caffè Tergesteo as well as countless bars, some even of good taste, which can allow you to "discover" a different square in every sense.

In the square, on the side facing the sea, there are two flagpoles surmounted by the halberd, the symbol of the city, and dedicated to the drivers.

We present them to you in an extremely current video, shot on the occasion of a recent "Raising the flag" made even more solemn by the notes of the Mameli anthem and the rustle of the Bora which never fails in Trieste. Click!
