The name of the town derives from the Latin ad nonum (a nine), because it is 9 Roman miles from Asti.
In the Middle Ages it became a notable strategic point of passage, so much so as to make the town a thriving center of merchants and financiers, retaining its importance until 1644, when it was destroyed by Spanish attacks.
Serious damage was suffered by the territory of the municipality in November 1994 due to the overflow of the Tanaro river.
