Ducal Castle - Castle of the Dukes of Sangro

The Castle of the Dukes of Sangro has been a national monument since 22 August 1902. Enlarged several times around an original Norman tower, it has crystallized in a Renaissance form.

It is characterized by six towers, four circular and two square.

The central square tower, the male, is the oldest part of the castle and is characterized by a sundial on the side overlooking the courtyard.

The same courtyard, which is accessed from the main entrance, is characterized by a lava stone pavement, by a gate on the left, which leads to the mezzanine floor, immediately followed by the access staircase to the throne room and then to the noble floor.

In the background, on the opposite side of the entrance, there is a portico and the internal well of the castle. The solemn throne room, on the main floor, reachable by a large double staircase, is surrounded by a rich fresco frieze made in the seventeenth century.

The mezzanine floor (former guardhouse) houses the archaeological exhibition of Florentine finds. On January 30, 1710, the scientist Raimondo di Sangro was born in the ducal castle of Torremaggiore.

Facing the castle, stands the building of the Ducal theater, formerly connected to the castle by an arch of which the attachment on the facade of the theater remains visible.
