Trieste Airport - Ronchi dei LegionariThe first origins of the airport date back to November 1935 when the structure serves as a support base for the training of fighters of the IV Stormo.
In the 1950s, the airport was recognized as having strategic importance due to its central position with respect to the cities of Trieste, Gorizia, Udine, Pordenone and the favorable railway connection with Monfalcone.
Thus was born the Consortium for Giuliano Airport with the aim of giving the airport a civil development.
The actual civil activity began on 2 December 1961 with the connection to Rome operated by a Douglas DC-3 of the SAM (Mediterranean Air Company).
Four years later, in October 1965, the first functional lot of structural works was inaugurated, which includes the first section of the runway, a junction and a more comfortable passenger terminal.
1967 is the year of the first international connection made by the German LTU with a Fokker F27 and coming from Dusseldorf. Thus began the phase of charter flights which sees a strong following in destinations in Northern Europe.
In the following year, the first ILS (Instrumental Landing System) was installed, a precision instrumental approach system to allow landing in marginal weather conditions.
In 1978 the runway was extended to the current 3000 meters while in 1982 the new control tower was inaugurated, still operational.
In 1997 the company Aeroporto Friuli - Venezia Giulia S.p.A., established 51% by the Consortium and 49% by the Region, replaced the Consortium in the management of the airport.
In 1998, works were completed on the new passenger terminal for a maximum capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year and on the new freight building.
In 2007, Aeroporto FVG S.p.A. obtains the forty-year total concession for the management of the airport, which is named after the Friulian Pietro Savorgnan di Brazzà.
Since 2010 the Region has become the sole shareholder of Aeroporto FVG S.p.A. by taking over all the shares held by the Consortium.
On 9 June 2011, the development of the intermodal hub was approved, which will extend over an area of ??475,000 square meters between the airport and the Trieste-Venice railway line, which runs 250 meters from the airport.
From November 2016 the airport changes its name and becomes Trieste Airport.
