Olevano Romano is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome in Lazio.
The center of Olevano Romano dates back at least to Roman times. An important monumental archeology bears witness to this: the remains of the polygonal walls, built in large roughly squared blocks in local stone, dating back to an era prior to the Romanization of the territory.
It became a "castrum" in the Middle Ages: it appears with this name in a deed of sale stipulated in 1232 between Oddone Colonna, new lord of Olevano, and Pope Gregory IX (1227-1241). The construction of the Castle dates back to this period, built on the high spur of limestone rock to defend the village. After the Colonnas, the feud passed to the Municipality of Rome, which in 1364 issued the Statutes of the city, then to the Orsinis by concession of Pope Boniface IX.
The last lord of Olevano was Prince Camillo Borghese (1775-1832), husband of Paolina Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister.
