Valmontone

Valmontone is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale in Lazio, located on a tuffaceous rise about 35 km from the capital.

During the Second World War Valmontone suffered extensive damage.

In 1944, the Allies planned the landing of Anzio with the aim of regaining control over Rome. Valmontone, being on the road to the capital, was a sensitive target, as it was located on the Via Casilina and on the Rome-Cassino-Naples railway.

Then, in May-June 1944, the Allies repeatedly attacked the city with aerial bombing, assuming the presence of German soldiers barricaded inside.

Valmontone was heavily hit: 80% of its buildings were razed to the ground, the rest were however considerably damaged and unsafe.

For the damage suffered and for the value shown at the end of the Second World War, the city was awarded the "Silver Medal for Military Valor".
