Nomentano Market

The Nomentano Market is located in Piazza Alessandria (Rome), in the Quartiere Salario. The origins of this market date back to the beginning of the 20th century, when, after Peroni had established its establishment in the square, numerous merchants began to open their stalls in what, at the time, was called Piazza Principe di Napoli.

In 1929 the masonry market that still exists today was built: it was designed by Elena Luzzatto, one of the first female architects in Italy, supported by the entrepreneur Augusto d'Arcangeli.

The structure follows the quadrilateral shape of the square and has a series of wrought iron entrances on two sides and at the four corners.

To decorate the structure, numerous bas-reliefs depicting the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus and images related to the goods sold in the market.

In 1946  after the fall of the Savoy monarchy - the square changed its name to Piazza Alessandria, and the market became "the market of Piazza Alessandria" for everyone.
