Duino-Aurisina is in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located north of Trieste. It takes its name from Duino and Aurisina, the two largest of the five municipalities that were suppressed in 1928 (together with Malchina, San Pelagio and Slivia) to form the new body. The municipal seat is located in Aurisina, precisely in the Cave suburb.
In this municipality there is the "Costa dei Barbari FKK" beach.
For many years, the province of Trieste was reached, in the summer, by many tourists who reached Istria, Kvarner or Dalmatia from these roads.
Then came the pandemic and tourism also had its changes as well as epochal repercussions. Reaching Croatia, for many has become a fear but also a problem due to the many measures that governed its border crossings and which are subject to changing changes every week.
For many, therefore, even Trieste with its Gulf has become an opportunity to be discovered. Moreover, even the local beaches, especially those of the Amalfi Coast, guarantee beautiful landscapes and a habitat that recalls distant places.
Among the "beauties of Trieste", therefore not to be missed, a beach above all: the "Costa dei Barbari". A delightful strip of wild coast, which to see it must be earned with sweat and effort, along some very steep paths that descend to the sea from the “Costiera”.
But once you get to the beach, the show is unique. The sandy coasts of nearby Grado and Lignano seem so far from the rocks and pebbles of the Costa dei Barbari. The cabins, deck chairs and umbrellas typical of many Adriatic beaches seem unknown in this thin strip of rock and pebbles, which runs from the Sistiana quarry to the Ginestre.
Small inlets, imposing cliffs, silent beaches and a contrast of colors, dominated by the blue of the Adriatic and the green of the lush vegetation that plunges sheer into the sea from the Karst.
The beach is not popular. In fact, since 1963, it has been managed by an army of 600 members belonging to the "Liburnia" naturist association.
To realize that this beach is different from many others, it is sufficient to look at a sign facing the sea that bears the letters "FKK". As if to say, nudism is allowed but the preconceptions leave them elsewhere. Also because one should oppose a tradition that has persisted down here since the nineteenth century, when the philosophy of nudism and body culture was introduced in the city lounges from Habsburg Austria.
On this beach where nudists and non-nudists coexist, the love for nature and the common desire to protect this "silent" stretch of coast from dirt, mass and the spread of urbanization prevails.
Until?
Looking at the tenacity, which in August 1979 pushed swimmers to stop a blitz by the Carabinieri, who wanted to get them dressed, one would say that the "Costa dei Barbari" will remain a paradise for a long time to come.
