It was November 24, 1973 when a US Air Force C-117 plane was flying over the Vatnajökull glacier to return to the Keflavìk base: a smooth flight with 5 men on board in a mission of ordinary administration and control.
Gregory Fletcher, the 26-year-old pilot at the time opted to land on the black beach of Solheimasandur, when the rescue was alerted, they arrived after an hour.
The people were rescued and the plane dismantled the most important pieces, such as the engine and the main mechanics, was left to its fate.
Word got around and over the years began an increasingly frequent pilgrimage of onlookers and tourists to the Solheimasandur beach to visit the aircraft's carcass.
