April 12, 1931 is considered the museum's birthday. On this day, or rather, on the night between 11 and 12 April, the State Antireligious Museum was inaugurated in the Church of St. Isaac with a solemn demonstration of Foucault's experience.
Just to reiterate the same importance of the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, monument to the courage of the Russian people in the fight against Napoleon's invasion in 1812 with its unique and artistic decoration was demolished in December 1931.
The preconditions for the construction of the museum museum of the building arose immediately after the nationalization of the church in the post revolutionary years, but the basis for organizing the museum itself, acquiring its funds and creating the first exhibition was the decree of the Presidium of the Central Committee all-Russian of June 18, 1928.
The restoration of the building, as well as the creation of the museum, was entrusted to AP Udalenkov, head of the Glavnauka state restoration workshops in Leningrad.
In the period from 1928 to 1931, priority repair work was carried out on the building, the main funds of the museum were formed and the foundations for the exhibition dedicated to the construction of the St. Isaac's Cathedral and its architecture were laid.
