One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, is the building built near the area where the Twin Towers once stood, collapsed following the terrorist attack on 11 September 2001. To date it turns out to be the tallest skyscraper in New York, if we also consider the long antenna with which we total about 541 meters in height; while the development of the building alone, counted from the ground up to the glass and metal balustrade at the top of the skyscraper, covers a vertical space of 417 meters, like the previous Twin Towers.
Following the attacks, Lower Manhattan found itself without its famous towers which, after the collapse, gave way to a heap of steel and concrete rubble that took almost two years of work to remove.
To cover the void left by the absence of the Twin Towers and to commemorate the victims of that tragedy, a competition was held for the design of the area that was to house a new complex, the World Trade Center.
The complex, designed by Daniel Libeskind, winner of the tender, today consists of six buildings among which the eye-catching One World Trade Center stands out, the project of which bears the name of the architect David Childs of the Som studio.
Where the Twin Towers once stood there is the 9/11 Memorial, a commemorative monument opened in September 2011 and characterized by the presence of two square tanks, surrounded by trees and water, whose surfaces coincide with the plants of the disappeared towers and which are located in the exact points where these arose.
