Tampei 101

The Taipei 101 is located in Taiwan, in the city of Taipei, has 101 floors, hence its name, and its height reaches 508 meters. It was the tallest skyscraper in the world until 2008, when that record passed to the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates.

The architecture of Taipei 101 recalls the main symbols of Taiwanese culture. The building consists of 8 truncated-pyramidal modules that are repeated in height, recalling the shape of a bamboo trunk, a very common plant in Taiwan and a symbol of local culture.

At the base of the skyscraper there are four large coins, one on each side, which recall Taiwanese symbols of happiness and the edges of the building are adorned with steel dragons.

The great peculiarity of this skyscraper, from the structural point of view, is found at its top, between the 87th and 92nd floors: a huge steel sphere with a diameter of 5.5 meters, made up of 41 superimposed discs of variable diameter and the incredible weight of 660 tons.

The sphere is suspended from steel cables connected to the structure. It is the largest tuned mass damper in the world. This device provides protection from horizontal actions generated by seismic events or strong gusts of wind.
