Villa Margherita (Villa Trieste) is the oldest public garden in Catanzaro. It was built on a project by Federico and Enrico Andreotti and opened to the public on 21 January 1881, on the occasion of the visit of Margherita di Savoia, to whom it owes its name.
The villa was born in the period of maximum expansion of Catanzaro, when, immediately after the unification of Italy, the city was transformed by the Manfredi Plan. In 1875, when the mayor was Francesco De Seta, a general plan was drawn up, which provided for the construction of the public garden on land planted with a vegetable garden and vineyard close to the former convent of Santa Chiara.
The works began in 1878 and ended in 1880. The inauguration took place on the occasion of the Savoy visit to the city, on January 21, 1881.
