In 1888, the Municipal Administration of Catanzaro approved the establishment of an "Ancient School of Arts and Crafts" to teach the arts of silk, ceramics, carpentry and mechanics.
The facade was designed by engineer Antonio Rosati with the collaboration of the Illuminati and Sparaciari professors of the “Regia Scuola Industriale” of Terni. The result is a valuable work of art with simple and elegant lines, adorned with symbolic figures, including the worker bee, which provide an allegorical ensemble of great impact.
The school was inaugurated in 1912 and in 1929 dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant Ercolino Scalfaro from Catanzaro, who died heroically in the First World War. In 1948 the original structure was raised with the execution of a large staircase, of great architectural impact, which completes the large atrium and leads to the upper floors; It remained to complete the insertion of the area relating to the structure of the old tramway, now disused. Unfortunately, this expansion was never carried out.
