The Church of Santa Maria del Riposo is a small church in Rome, located in the Aurelio district, at the intersection of via Aurelia and via della Madonna del Riposo.
The origin of the church is unknown, but it may have been initially a country sanctuary, then transformed into a great hall in the 15th century, when we have written news about this place of worship for the first time.
The chapel was further restored and decorated by the popes in the sixteenth century, in particular by Pius IV, to whom the internal plaque erected in 1561 was attributed to more fully venerate the icon of the Virgin Mary exhibited there, or the Sabbath of the Madonna.
Popular tradition is attributed to many miracles. In 1566 Pius V enlarged the church and built a farmhouse nearby, which was destroyed in 1953 by the widening of the road: today only one ashlar gate remains.
