Linguaglossa

Today Linguaglossa represents a reference center for summer or winter tourism on the north side of Etna. The country has a very strategic position.

Furthermore Linguaglossa is very famous for its flourishing agriculture with the production of Etna doc wine, dop oil, and hazelnuts. In the country you are still able to find the best craftsmen (blacksmiths-carpenters-scappellini-sawmills) of the area who have handed down the techniques and secrets of local craftsmanship from father to son. As for the food sector, one of the typical products of the Linguaglossa area is in “Sasizza o cippu”.

You cannot miss a walk through the streets of the town to admire this open-air art gallery. Between alleys and old houses you can see fabulous "murals" made by great artists, and represent stories and traditions of the area.

The history of Linguaglossa dates back to the time of the Greeks. The origins of the name Linguagrossa express three different ideologies:

  1.     Linguagrossa derives its name from a very ancient character "U 'zu linguarossa", or from the old miraculous miracle of Sant’Egidio, patron saint of the town, during the eruption of Etna in 1566 century.
  2.     Linguagrossa derives its name from a large tongue of lava existing nearby, or from the same linguistic conformation of the country.
  3.     Linguagrossa derives its name from the harshness of the language of its inhabitants.

After 1758 Linguagrossa begins to take the name of Linguaglossa.
