On 19 May 2006, the new Mercedes-Benz Museum was inaugurated in Stuttgart.
It is the only museum in the world capable of tracing the history of 120 years of the automotive industry, from its origins to today. The exhibition space is spread over an area of ??16,500 square meters on nine floors where 1,500 pieces can be admired, including 160 vehicles.
The proximity to the historic Mercedes-Benz plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim links tradition with modernity: the museum shows how the history of the automobile is constantly projected towards the future, thanks to the innovative strength of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
The architectural project, carried out in the "A studio" of world-famous Dutch architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, is also inspired by this principle. Although it fully interprets tradition, thanks to its extraordinary modernity, the work seems to belong to the future.
The architectural concept of the building is based on the "genetic heritage" of the brand. The interior symbolizes the DNA spiral, which in its double helix form holds the human genetic heritage.
