Giustiniani palace at the Lateran - Massimo Lancellotti Casino

The "villa Giustiniani al Laterano", also known as "Casino Massimo Lancellotti" is a seventeenth-century villa named after the successive owners.

It was commissioned by the Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani, prince of Bassano and depositary of the Apostolic Chamber, who, after having acquired a land planted with vines in 1605, had a sumptuous residence built there.

Thus the description of Filippo Titi in his work of him:

«On the corner of the main road of s. Giò Laterano, which leads to S. Maria Maggiore, on the right hand is this Villa, which has a door of magnificent architecture by Carlo Lambardi. The casino is designed by Borromino, and inside it, and throughout the villa, many ancient marbles are scattered, both statues and busts, as well as bas-reliefs, among which one was the most beautiful, and the most preserved, that has remained. from antiquity, it is a bas-relief carved around a large vase, placed at the top of an avenue, and which is carved in the book of ancient bas-reliefs, which is sold in the Chamber Chalcography in Monte Citorio "

In 1802 Massimo took over the property and, by this way, in 1848 the villa passed to the Lancellotti, who in 1871, following the subdivision of the Esquiline, sold the vast park as a building family area: while thus the park began to disappear under the expansion of the city, in 1885 the monumental portal of the surrounding wall of the villa was ceded to the state.

It was repositioned in 1931 as the entrance to Villa Celimontana al Celio, where it is still located today.

In 1948 it was found by the Custody of the Holy Land, which today houses the Delegation for Italy.
