Mausoleum of Romulus

The mausoleum of Romulus is part of the three buildings that make up the Imperial Villa of Maxentius: the mausoleum;

The Imperial Villa is attributed to the emperor Maxentius (306-312 AD) and the mausoleum was dedicated to Romulus, the young son of the emperor who died prematurely.

The building has a circular plan and is surrounded by an imposing four-sided portico that opens onto the ancient Appian Way, evidently intended for the burial of members of the imperial family, and the young scion who died in 309 AD was certainly buried there

The Massenziano complex extends between the II and III miles of the Via Appia Antica. The construction should have developed on two levels: a lower and basement, intended as a funerary crypt, and an upper floor which, however, was never built.

The original access walled up in past centuries and reopened by the Capitoline superintendency in the recent restoration works is located on the facade opposite the Via Appia Antica.
