National Museum of Brazil - Virtual Tour 360°

The National Museum of Brazil (original name in Portuguese: Museu Nacional) is an autonomous institution affiliated with the Forum of Science and Culture of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, under the Ministry of Education.

It was founded on June 6, 1818 by King John VI of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve to promote the country's cultural and economic progress. It is located in the Paço de São Cristóvão, the former residence of the Brazilian royal family, in the Quinta da Boa Vista Park in the San Cristovan neighborhood.

The museum houses a vast collection, of which the Egyptian collection certainly stands out, the largest in Latin America, while the Greco-Roman collection comes mainly from the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompei.

Furthermore, to enrich the museum there was the large collection of ethnology, in which artifacts and artifacts were exhibited that showed the richness of indigenous cultures, Afro-Brazilian culture and Pacific cultures. Finally there were collections of zoology, mineralogy and meteorites.

In the night between 2 and 3 September 2018 a great fire devastated the museum, destroying the building and almost all of the collections collected in its 200-year history.
