The fraction is divided into the villages Stazzano Vecchio and Stazzano Nuovo.
Stazzano Vecchio was abandoned in 1901 due to a terrible earthquake which fortunately did not cause victims.
The inhabitants moved to Stazzano Nuovo, thus leaving the ancient village surrounded by nature, becoming one of the largest and most beautiful ghost towns in Lazio.
The origins of the name are unknown but popular fantasies want to bring them back to the stazzo, since, probably, in the area, there were mule tracks that led from the nearby towns to the pastures of the Lucretili Mountains.
The area has been inhabited since Roman times as evidenced by the ruins in nearby Cretone.
We are near Palombara Sabina, and to get to the Vecchia Stazzano you take a very scenic stretch of white road, which in the autumn season offers the wonderful spectacle of foliage, with its shades of color in the vegetation, from yellow to red, and the wild pomegranate trees. The name of the site, according to some scholars, could derive from the Castrum Statianum of the Constantinian era (mentioned in a document of 1111 AD).
Or from the aristocratic Roman family of the Stazi, who built their villa where the real village was later built. and precisely, which stands out on a small very panoramic hill, like a stronghold. According to other experts, however, Stazzano originates from "statoum", that is the natural access that, through the mule tracks, made it possible to reach with the flocks the land at high altitude called "stazzi", in fact, inhabited in the summer to escape the heat of the plain.
