Duse Theater

The Duse Theater is one of the oldest theaters in Bologna. It is traditionally the city's prose theatre. In the building that hosts it, the Palazzo del Giglio in via Cartoleria, the San Saverio theater used for school plays of a Jesuit college was active since the mid-17th century. In 1822 the engineer Antonio Brunetti took over the hall, which then took the name of Teatro Brunetti from the new owner. Initially the billboard was reserved for puppet shows and circus performances.

Upon the owner's death, his nephews decided to carry out a major renovation to modernize the theatre. In 1865 the new hall was inaugurated with two orders of galleries and a gallery, equipped with gas lighting, a novelty for the time. The Brunetti Theatre, with a program of prose, opera, operetta and concerts, soon became one of the most important theaters in the city, so much so that it hosted King Umberto I with his wife Margherita in 1878 and two shows by Sarah Ber
