The Ponchielli Theater in Cremona was built, based on a design by the architect Luigi Canonica, starting in 1806 on the ruins of the previous 'Teatro della Società', destroyed by fire. It was named after the composer Amilcare Ponchielli in 1907.
Formerly Cremona had a Rangoni/Ariberti Theater, built in 1670 and active until 1717 when it was transformed into a church, following a donation. Since then the performances have been held in temporary halls.
In 1733 a group of nobles and patricians decided to equip the city with a new theatre. Only in 1745 did the Marquis Giuseppe Lodi Mora make a piece of land available in the district of San Bartolomeo, towards Porta Po, while the funds were provided by the nobleman G.B. Nazari, who would become its owner.
