The history of the Biennale has distant roots. The origins date back to 1895 with the first International Art Exhibition that will cross the whole of the 1900s to arrive, in 2019, at the 58th edition. In 1932 La Biennale gave birth to the Mostra d'Arte Cinematografica, the first film festival ever organized in the world, which together with Music (from 1930), Theater (from 1934), Architecture (from 1980) and Dance (from 1999) make up the composite and peculiar cultural offer of the Biennale.
"The Historical Archive is the place from which and towards which the memories and documents of the past pass but it is also the place of the archive of our future" (Paolo Baratta).
The Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts (ASAC) protects, preserves and enhances the documentary heritage of the Venice Biennale and the arts of the twentieth century, collected from 1895 to today.
The ASAC, in addition to conservation, cataloging, inventory and research, enhances the documentary heritage produced by the Biennale. He curates directly promoted exhibitions and collaborates with the various sectors of the Foundation to organize the events. The promotion of heritage is also carried out outside the Foundation, through the circulation of documents and works on loan to Italian and foreign institutions.
The goal is to contribute to the protection of the artistic-cultural, archival and bibliographic heritage, collected in over a century with the experience of the Venice Biennale, for its enhancement within the new research and experimentation in the field of contemporary arts, through protection and conservation interventions that make it accessible to the community.
