Buranelli Canal - Medio CanalThe Medio Canal or Buranelli Canal is a branch of the Botteniga, a resurgence river of the Veneto-Friuli plain.
The Buranelli Canal is the most important river in Treviso. It was born at the Pria bridge, at the Botteniga entrance into Treviso.
The canal is located in the historic center of Treviso, and owes its name to the presence of a palace that belonged to the Buranelli, a family of merchants from Burano who, in the sixteenth century, were lucky enough to be able to witness this wonderful panorama.
After skirting the park and the back of Palazzo Rinaldi, the canal passes under a first bridge: in this place, as evidenced by several period photographs, the women of the area used to wash their clothes. Not far away is the house that belonged to the poet Giovanni Comisso, even further a pedestrian walkway and the Buranelli bridge, near which there is still a sixteenth-century building, formerly the residence and warehouse of traders from the lagoon island of Burano: from here comes the best known name of the canal.
After a short stretch the canal disappears under a low brick building with four arches, almost a covered bridge, behind which via Palestro passes. A little further along the block where the ancient Beccherie restaurant is located (the canal is also called the Beccherie canal). After passing under via Martiri della Libertà, it reappears, with the name of the hospital canal, between vicolo San Pancrazio and piazza Santa Maria dei battuti, on which is the entrance to the former hospital that bore this name.
It therefore flows under the old hospital, now a branch of the University of Padua and the Ca 'Foscari University of Venice, along the current Piazza Università to finally flow onto the Sile, at the height of the pedestrian bridge inspired by the original bridge of Santa Margherita as painted in the second half of the eighteenth century by Medoro Coghetto.
