The castle has very ancient origins: in 809 two Lombard nobles, Faulo and Autari had the church of S. Mamiliano built, donated to the abbey of Farfa.

The memory of this ancient building lives on in the current name of the medieval castle  which seems to have been placed to guard the bold bridge of the abbey, from the Etruscan era.

According to the legend that wants the destruction of vulci by the Saracens in 964 AD. on that same occasion the abbey was also razed to the ground.

However, numerous medieval documents continue to mention the abbey among the properties of the church.

The current appearance of the castle dates back to the 12th century. In the 13th century it was perhaps owned by the Templars: a settlement was formed next to it which in 1313 housed 96 families.

The Aldobrandeschi first and the Farnese then included the castle among their properties.

Among the great owners of the medieval castle we remember Luciano Bonaparte, prince of Canino, and Alessandro Torlonia.
