The "Sigismondo Castromediano" Museum in Lecce is an archaeological museum featuring a small art gallery and a lapidary.
Founded in 1868 by Sigismondo Castromediano, Duke of Cavallino, it stands as the oldest museum in Puglia.
Its collection encompasses numerous artifacts from the Messapian civilization and Roman settlements. In the prehistoric section, a faithful reconstruction of the Grotta dei Cervi in Porto Badisco is displayed, showcasing captivating rock paintings.
The art gallery exhibits paintings that document Byzantine and Venetian influences on local artists from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Works by Lorenzo Veneziano, Alvise Vivarini, Bartolomeo Vivarini, Paolo Finoglio, Pacecco De Rosa, Agostino Beltrano, Giovanni Andrea Coppola, Antonio Verrio, Andrea Malinconico and his son Nicola, Corrado Giaquinto, Francesco de Mura, and Oronzo Tiso are featured. A section dedicated to the so-called minor arts displays Baroque ceramics, pottery, ivories, bronzes, and silvers.
