National Museum of India




The National Museum of India in New Delhi is the largest museum in India. Inside it houses a great variety of objects starting from prehistoric times up to modern art.

The museum holds over 200,000 works, of Indian and foreign origins, and covers more than 5,000 years of Indian cultural heritage.

Museum dedicated to the history and iconography of Indian art and Buddhist studies. The museum was merged with the Asian Antiquities Museum to bring together the treasures of India and Central Asia. The collections include examples of art and archeology, anthropology, decorative arts and epigraphy.

The art of painting is well represented with Indian miniatures from the Mughal, Rājput, Deccani and Pahari schools. The museum has beautiful ancient manuscripts, as well as temple tapestries, richly brocaded saris, gemstone weapons, and painted pottery. Central Asian antiquities recovered by Sir Aurel Stein include the only examples of wall paintings from Buddhist shrines outside their home countries.
