The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is a cathedral in Moscow, on the bank of the Moskva River, a short distance from the Kremlin, towards the west. It is the tallest Eastern Orthodox church.
When the last Napoleonic soldiers left Moscow, Tsar Alexander I signed a manifesto on December 25, 1812, in which he declared his intention to build a cathedral in honor of Christ the Savior, "to express Our gratitude to Divine Providence for having saved the Russia by the fate that loomed over It "and as a memorial of the sacrifices of the Russian people.
