The State Tretyakov Gallery is a museum in Moscow, which houses one of the largest collections of Russian fine art in the world.
The history of the picture gallery begins in 1856 when the Moscow merchant Pavel Michajlovia Tretyakov (1832-1898) began buying works of art from Russian artists of the time, with the aim of creating a collection that could one day become a national museum.
In 1892 Tretyakov donated his now famous collection to the nation.
