Yungang Grottoes


There are 252 caves in Yungang and there are 51,000 statues typical of Chinese Buddhist sculptures from the 5th and 6th centuries AD, among which there are many masterpieces. The construction of the main complex took 40 years, but the cave we see today was only completed in 525.


The whole group of caves is majestic and magnificent and the stone carvings are exquisite and delicate, the eastern caves usually have a pagoda inside.

The caves to the west vary in size and most of them are simple niches carved into the rock face. The most famous of the Yungang Caves are numbers 5 and 6, located in the center of the complex.
