Mutianyu (Traditional Chinese 慕田峪, pinyin Mùtiányù) is a section of the Great Wall of China in the Huairou District, 70 km northeast of Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Wall is connected to the Juyongguan Pass to the west and the Gubeikou Gate to the east. One of the best preserved sections of the monument, Mutianyu had the specific function of protecting the capital and the imperial tombs.
Originally built in the mid-6th century during the Northern Qi dynasty, Mutianyu is older than the Badaling section. During the Ming Dynasty, under the supervision of General Xu Da, the construction of the present Wall began, on the foundations of the previous one. In 1404 a step was built there, while a part was rebuilt in 1569, for the most part preserved until today. The Mutianyu section is the one of greatest size and quality of the whole Great Wall.
The area where this section is located is surrounded by forests and streams.
Mutianyu is now open to the public, with tourist facilities such as a gondola lift and descents from the wall.
If you are in Beijing, you cannot fail to dedicate at least one day to one of the most majestic and emblematic works of human genius in the world.
