The Atomium is a monument located in the Heysel park in Brussels. It is a steel construction that represents the 9 atoms of a unit cell of an iron crystal: a reference to the sciences and uses of the atom, important themes in full development at the time.
It was built for Expo 1958, the universal exhibition organized that year by the city of Brussels. Designed by architect André Waterkeyn, it was originally supposed to last six months. The monument has a total height of 102 meters. The spheres, which have a diameter of 18 meters, are connected by escalators and stairs from which, through windows and portholes, it is possible to look at the other spheres or the panorama below.
