Dalmatian School of SS. George and Tryphon, San Giorgio degli Schiavoni

The Schools are an ancient Venetian institution; these are secular brotherhoods, some present in Venice as early as the 9th century. For over seven hundred years they were a fundamental part of the social, political, economic and religious organization of the Serenissima.

At the beginning of the 16th century there were more than 200 Schools; the "trade schools", real guilds, had an important role in the protection and development of arts and crafts (woolmakers, shoemakers, goldsmiths, sailors, blacksmiths, etc.); alongside these, the Schools of Devotion and the Schools of Nation (Greeks, Albanians, Luccans, Milaneses) were born. Among the latter is the Dalmatian School. That the Dalmatian coast was of vital interest for the Serenissima is also demonstrated by the geographical maps of the time which define the entire Adriatic Sea as the Gulf of Venice.

The Scuole Grandi of Venice are associations born, unlike the Scuole Minori - which were professional corporations - as schools of devotion for a saint, also with the aim of mutual aid and assistance. The Dalmatian School of San Giorgio e Trifone also called Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni was created, like other Schools of Nationality, to bring together citizens of Dalmatian origin residing in Venice.

The Dalmatian School, together with the other four Great Schools still present in Venice, wants to enhance that great artistic heritage that has been entrusted to us by past generations but also wants to take charge of all those historical and moral values that have distinguished it in its six hundred years of history .
