The San Michele castle is a fortified building, dating back to the Giudicale period, which stands on the hill of the same name in Cagliari. Excavations in 1990 brought to light the remains of a country church, perhaps from the early Middle Ages, on which a castle was then built at least in the 12th century to defend the city of Sant Igia, the capital of the Giudicato of Cagliari.
The complex has three towers and a moat that surrounds the structure. The most important period of the castle is undoubtedly between 1350 and 1511, when the noble Spanish family of Carroz lived.
Later it was abandoned and used as a hospital during the "Sant'Efisio" plague epidemic (1652-1656). Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was fortified again as a defensive function against the French attack.
Around 1940 it was stationed at the Regia Marina (later Navy) and then demoted until it was sold to the State and the Municipality of Cagliari. Currently the castle has undergone important structural changes and is used as an artistic and cultural center.
