Museum of the San Servolo Asylum - La madness reclusaThe "Museum of the San Servolo Asylum - La madness reclusa" was inaugurated on 20 May 2006 and collects the artefacts belonging to the psychiatric hospital, an institution which characterized the history of the island of San Servolo from the early 18th century until to 1978. The creation of the museum was handled for the scientific and historical aspect by professors Diego Fontanari and Mario Galzigna while for the exhibition part by the architect Barbara Accordi.
The main purpose of the Museum, already implicit in its name (The recluse madness), is to highlight - through specific finds, captions and explanatory panels - the marginalizing and segregating dimension of the mental hospital institution.
A place to read, learn and discover the bond that united the community to this part of its territory, even if through pain.
The museum collects documents (reproductions of medical records, registers, prints, photographs) that briefly introduce the history of the hospital, restraint instruments (cuffs, ankle locks, sleeves, etc.), hydrotherapy showers, patient artefacts ( paintings, objects, etc.), a piano testifying to the beginning of music therapy, various scientific and clinical instruments (microscopes, electroshock instruments, etc.). The museum displays various photos that reproduce daily life in the asylum and a section of photographs of patients before and after admission to San Servolo.
