Civic Museums of Treviso - Seat of Santa CaterinaFrom the stay of Dante to the Church dedicated to the patron saint of theologians and philosophers, from the Napoleonic profanation to the adventurous rediscovery of the frescoes during the Second World War, the convent complex of Santa Caterina is part of that beating heart of history, culture, civilization and beauty that makes Treviso one of the hidden pearls of the Italian artistic panorama.
Strengthened by its collections, from the archaeological collection to the art gallery, fascinating for its architecture and atmosphere, the Santa Caterina Museum, in the heart of the city centre, welcomes visitors in the most typical Treviso way: with grace, warmth and elegance.
The Civic Museums of Treviso, inaugurated in 1882 with the name of Museo Trivigiano by Luigi Bailo, today have three locations located within the city walls, hosting the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions.
In the Seventies, given the success of the great exhibition on Arturo Martini set up by Carlo Scarpa in 1967 inside the convent complex that previously belonged to the Serviti friars, the municipal administration decided to stipulate an agreement with the State, owner of the property, to transform the entire complex into a museum, entrusting the project, in 1974, to Scarpa himself.
Having set aside the Venetian architect's project, after long and demanding recovery and restoration works, the complex has become the main headquarters of the Treviso Civic Museums since June 2002.
Since July 2003 the oldest branch in Borgo Cavour was closed due to "necessary and demanding renovation works".
