The plateau where the current town of San Lorenzo del Vallo stands has preserved from ancient times the traces of a land that was once submerged as evidenced by the various findings of marine shells. Furthermore, its geological structure has preserved various sources of pure water which is not a secondary reason that has allowed and facilitated human settlement.
However, with the available sources, it is difficult to pinpoint the birth of the first settlements of San Lorenzo.
The emperor Augustus in constituting the province of Brutium also incorporated a territory called Interamnium (land located between two rivers) in which the current territory of San Lorenzo most likely also fell.
