Amarelli Palace - Giorgio Amarelli Licorice Museum

The Amarelli Palace - De Falco, which has always belonged to the Amarelli family, an old lineage whose origins can be traced back to a mythical Ansoise and whose first exponent, historically verified, was Alexander, a crusader in 1101, is located in Rossano, in Contrada Amarelli.

Solid and imposing manor residence, used more than anything else, as its fortified structures and multiple loopholes still demonstrate, to defend the surrounding territory, could perhaps be identified with the Castello S. Angelo, built with the remains of the destroyed arsenal of the republic of Turio , in 1543, to defend itself from the incursions of the Turks.

The complex in which the building is located is also interesting, as it testifies to the transition from a society, still structured according to ancient feudal systems, to another which favors forms of production aimed at the intensive exploitation of the land, thanks to eighteenth-nineteenth century intuitions and to the technological innovations of the 20th century.

These homes are transformed into real production centers, with their own economic-social organization and a precise functional structure. Warehouses and workshops with machines for the transformation of agricultural products and for proto-industrialization were added to the villa, surrounded by an ever-increasing number of accommodations for the settlers. Thus was born the "Concio" for the extraction of liquorice juice.

Palazzo Amarelli, an important period residence in Calabria, hosts the Rossano Licorice Museum, the second most visited business museum in Italy. Inside it displays the tools used in the processing, marketing and extraction of the root from from which liquorice is obtained.

Also on display are clothes, objects and manuscripts linked to the Amarelli family who, for around 3 centuries, has been involved in the production of the famous liquorice of the same name. It is the only Italian museum on this topic.

Today open for visits to the museum or as an ideal location for exclusive events.
