Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi in Siena

Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi: A Spiritual Haven in Siena

The Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi, whose full name is San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi, stands as a testament to spiritual devotion in Siena. Perched atop the hill overlooking Valdimontone, it graces Piazza Manzoni with its presence. The Servites, or the Servants of Mary, arrived in Siena around 1250, originating from their initial convent on Monte Senario, founded in 1234.

Initially settling outside the city walls, they were later invited by the municipality to construct their church within the city walls. The chosen location was the then-existing parish church of San Clemente, situated on the current site of the basilica. The construction of the convent commenced a few years after 1250, facilitated by a land donation from the Tolomei family and a contribution of bricks from the municipality. The new convent incorporated the existing parish church of San Clemente, giving rise to the name of the convent.

The Servite presence in Siena has left an indelible mark, not only in the spiritual realm but also in the architectural and historical tapestry of the city. The Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi stands today as a symbol of their enduring commitment to faith and service.
