The first document of the Villa dates back to January 3, 1255 when the property passed from the Visconti family to the Benedictine monastery of San Michele.
Important noble families, the Verità and the Nichesolas gave it its definitive structure during the 1400s and the first decades of the following century.
In 1500 the Counts Murari of the Corte Brà commissioned the interior frescoes.
The singular name of the villa "La Mattarana" derives from that of a thirteenth century abbess: "Mater Anna". The current building dates back to 1400, while the internal frescoes and the noble chapel are from 1500 (school of Paolo Caliari known as the "Veronese").
Worthy of note is the Sala degli Imperatori whose ceiling, frescoed with grotesque decorations, is the work of Bernardino India, collaborator of Andrea Palladio.
