The Decima Castle was an early medieval fortification that stood on the tenth mile of the ancient Via Laurentina, the Roman road that led to Lavinio. The excavations carried out starting from 1971 have found a vast necropolis of the VIII-VII century BC, referable to an urban center identified as 'Politorium' or 'Tellenae', later fortified again by the Romans as part of the defensive system that protected the city in the 4th century BC.
The first document that mentions a Castrum Pontis Decimi dates back to 1081 and confirms its possession at the monastery of San Paolo; the Castle later passed under the control of the monastery of Sant’Alessio, then of the Frangipane and the monastery of San Saba. In the sixteenth century it became the property of the Santo Spirito hospital and in the eighteenth century it passed to Cardinal Ludovico Maria Torriggiani, Secretary of State of Pope Clement XIII, who rebuilt it in its current form in 1768.
The structure is closed by four arms, with a crenellated entrance accompanied by a tower. In the center there is an internal courtyard, with a circular fountain, overlooked by the Church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo.
