Christ Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: Cristo Redentor) is an Art Deco style statue representing Jesus Christ.

Located on the top of the Corcovado mountain, it rises 700 meters above sea level. overlooking the city and the bay of Rio de Janeiro, and is 38mt high. , of which 8 are part of the base.

The idea of ​​building a statue on top of Corcovado Mountain was born around 1850, when the Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss asked Princess Isabella for funds for the construction of a large religious monument. The latter did not agree very much with this idea, which was completely abandoned in 1889 when Brazil became a republic and there was the separation of state and church.

A second proposal for the construction of the statue was launched by the archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro in 1921. An event called Monument Week was organized to raise the funds necessary for its construction, which came in large part from Brazilian Catholics. The design of this construction had to contain a representation of the Christian symbol of the cross and the Christ had to hold a globe in his hands and be placed on a base representing the world. However, the project of Christ with open arms was chosen.
