Church of San Cataldo

The Church of San Cataldo is a Catholic place of worship in Palermo (Sicily - Italy), built in the 12th century and located near Piazza Bellini.

Founded by Maione of Bari, in the years in which he was great admiral of William I, i.e. between 1154 and 1160, the building was subsequently entrusted to the Benedictines of Monreale, who looked after it until 1787.

In 1882, after various vicissitudes which saw the church incorporated into a neoclassical structure by the architect Alessandro Emmanuele Marvuglia and even transformed into a post office, it was entirely restored by Giuseppe Patricolo and returned to its rigorous original architectural structure.

The church of San Cataldo is very frequently used as a testimonial of the monumental image of Palermo, in particular of the city in the Norman age, due to its peculiarity of styles present (eastern and western). The foundation of the church is usually placed in the years immediately following the mid-12th century.
