Convent of the Discalced Carmelites - Church of the Madonna dei Rimedi

The Church of the Madonna dei Rimedi and Convent of the Discalced Carmelites is a baroque religious complex in Palermo. It is located in Independence Square.

During the campaign for the Norman conquest of Sicily (1064-1072), the lighting of fires suggested in a dream by the Virgin proved to be an excellent "remedy" to drive away the annoying insects that weaken the troops engaged in military actions.

Once the island was conquered, as a sign of gratitude, the Grand Count Ruggero built the original church, dedicating it to Santa Maria dei Rimedi.

The current structure was born in 1609, after the arrival of Father Domenico di Gesù and Maria in Palermo, called by the viceroy of Sicily Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga, Marquis of Vigliena, Duke of Escalona, and on 25 April of the following year it was consecrated by Cardinal Giannettino Doria.
