The origins of the cathedral trace back to 1144 when Bishop Formoso initiated its construction. In 1230, responding to the vision of Bishop Roberto Voltorico, the cathedral underwent significant renovations and was reconstructed in the Romanesque style.

In 1659, under the patronage of Bishop Luigi Pappacoda, the renowned Lecce architect Giuseppe Zimbalo, also known as "Lo Zingarello," was entrusted with the task of transforming the cathedral into a masterpiece of Baroque Lecce style.

Preserving the original Romanesque footprint, the foundation stone was laid on January 1 of the same year. The construction, under Zimbalo's masterful guidance, continued from 1659 to 1670, culminating in the solemn consecration of the new cathedral by Bishop Pappacoda.
